Mesoamerica and the Book of Mormon, Is This the Place? (book)
Mesoamerica and the Book of Mormon, Is This the Place? by Dr. John L. Lund is an excellent book for both the beginning enthusiast of Book of Mormon geography and chronology, and the seasoned scholar. The book presents the current thinking and models of Book of Mormon geography (Mesoamerica, Great Lakes and South America) and gives many of the accepted ideas about the validity of the Mesoamerica model. Lund also quotes from statements made by Joseph Smith about specific locations and accepts them literally. This requires some deviation from many LDS scholars regarding the location of Lehi's landing place. He also presents several second-hand quotes regarding statements made by Brigham Young and others about the route of Moroni's journey to hide the plates in upstate New York. Hebrew and Egyptian language samples are compared to Mesoamerican samples. Dr. Lund discusses multiple evidences for the Book of Mormon including chiasmus, parallelism, language clues, demography, geology, calendars, climate and traditions such as Quetzalcoatl.
This is a short description of the book from Dr. Lund's website: Did you know...? Jospeh Smith declared that the city of Zarahemla stood upon the land of Guatemala, which was part of southern Mexico in his day. There are two hills named Cumorah. One hill located in the Land of Desolation where the final battles of both the Jaredites and Nephites took place; another twenty-five hundred miles north where Moroni buried the abridgement of the Book of Mormon. Find out why! While nothing can take the place of a spiritual witness of the truthfulness of the Book of Mormon, an understanding of the correlating evidence of the Book of Mormon, especially as it relates to geography, can provide greater appreciation for this inspired book of scripture. Most people are greatly surprised at how much evidence and information there is about the geography in the Book of Mormon, both things that are internally there and things that have been said by prophets.
